The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) just launched a website about their Refugee Programs. This website is a great tool for people wanting more information about refugees coming to Oregon, statistics about the new arrivals and an overview of the refugee experience. The website is also a resource for refugees themselves learning about the system, how to access benefits and where to turn for help. IRCO and it’s many programs are referred to throughout the new site as main providers of refugee assistance.
Check out the new DHS Refugee site when you get the chance, and spread the word!

Campaign Vision
The Capital Campaign supports IRCO’s goal of creating a multicultural IRCO Family Center (IFC). The IFC will offer multiethnic families in Multnomah County culturally and linguistically customized services for children, youth, family, and health care. These specialized services are an integral part in leading Portland’s newest residents to long-term self-sufficiency, social adaptation, and integration into Oregon society.

Portland police officer Tina Willard, left, shows Chelsie Lentz, a Portland Multnomah Youth Corps
program participant, how to look up a crime suspect's files.
The SummerWorks jobs program - funded by the recently passed Federal Recovery Act and administered locally by WorkSystems, Inc., through IRCO - placed 228 youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in jobs with the city of Portland, private businesses and nonprofits. To be eligible, they had to meet low-income guidelines and identify as at least one of the following: school dropout or at risk of dropping out; deficient in basic literacy skills; gang involved or effected; homeless, runaway or foster child; juvenile justice offender or effected; pregnant or parenting; learning or physical disabled; one or more grade levels behind in school.
