Program Summary

The purpose of this program is to help non native English speakers develop a long-term career in the metal industry. Applicants meeting eligibility requirements receive information about Oregon's metal industry, vocational training information, job search assistance, job retention, and career development services.

This program is sponsored by the Portland Development Commission. Applicants to the program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Non-native English speaker Authorized to work in the United States
  • Resident of the city of Portland
  • At least 18 years old
  • Interested in a long-term career in the metal industry

Orientation and Assessment

During the initial appointment at IRCO, the applicant will receive information about the PACE program and employment opportunities in the metal industry. Staff will discuss the applicant's career goals and possible steps to reaching the outlined goal. English language ability and math skills will also be assessed at this time.

Case Management Services

Each applicant accepted into the PACE program will work with his/her Career Coach to create a Career Plan. Depending on the skill set and career goal of the participant, the participant may be referred to specialized classes or training programs. Other participants may be able to start looking for employment in the metal industry immediately.

Training

Program participants are able to participate in Job Readiness Training classes offered on-site to assist them in building their communication skills, workplace-specific vocabulary, mathematics, safety practices, and job search skills. Participants may be referred to a local community college or other training programs for additional skill building if required and/or available . Past program participants have completed trainings offered by Mt. Hood Community College, Portland Community College, Clackamas Community College, Union Local 104, Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc and others.

Job Placement and Retention

PACE staff help participants network with various metal industry employers and identify job opportunities in their field of interest. Once a participant becomes employed, the PACE program continues to support and check in with the participant on a regular basis until the participant reaches his/her 18-month employment anniversary. Staff remain available to provide on-site job retention services, on-going career counseling and training advice.

Support Services

While enrolled in the PACE program, participants may have access to limited funds to assist with work/career-related training, transportation, or tools needed to start a new job.
